       Abstract

Power is one of the most expansive yet contentious concepts in social theory. In a significant strand of classical theories, power was primarily understood through the lens of will-imposition, dominion, coercion, and obedience; however, in contemporary theories, the analysis of power has transcended the confines of physical force and compulsion to encompass the roles of consent, culture, meaning, knowledge, norm, and discourse. The central inquiry of this research is whether this conceptual expansion signifies a transition from domination to meaning, or whether domination is reproduced in more complex modalities through symbolic and discursive mechanisms. Employing a conceptual-comparative methodology with a focus on the selected works of Max Weber, Antonio Gramsci, Pierre Bourdieu, and Michel Foucault, this study examines four major articulations of power in social theory: power, domination, and authority in Weber’s theory; hegemony in Gramsci’s thought; symbolic power in Bourdieu’s theory; and relational-discursive power in Foucault’s thought. The findings of the research demonstrate that these perspectives do not represent linear, mutually exclusive stages, but rather complementary strata for comprehending social power. Consequently, the expansion of the concept of power does not culminate in the erasure of domination; rather, it extends the scope of its analysis from overt forms of command and coercion to the cultural, symbolic, epistemic, and discursive mechanisms of subjugation. Within this framework, meaning is conceptualized not as the antithesis of power, but as one of the primary arenas for the exercise, legitimation, and reproduction of power relations within society.
