Abstract
Power is one of the fundamental concepts in philosophy, political sociology, and cultural studies. Throughout the history of social and political thought, power has been conceptualized in different ways. Classical approaches have often associated power with the capacity of individuals, groups, or institutions to impose their will on others, particularly through the state, law, sovereignty, and coercion. Michel Foucault challenged this understanding by conceptualizing power not as a fixed and possessable entity but as a relational and networked process operating through discourse, knowledge, norms, surveillance, classification, institutions, and disciplinary practices. From this perspective, power is not merely repressive; it is also productive because it contributes to the production of knowledge, truth, identities, and subjects. This article adopts a theoretical and analytical approach based on library research to examine the relationship between power and discourse in Foucault’s thought. The literature review examines recent studies applying Foucauldian discourse analysis to education, policy, social media, and organizational contexts. The theoretical framework then analyzes the concepts of power, discourse, power/knowledge, truth, regimes of truth, discipline, surveillance, subjectivation, and resistance. Antonio Gramsci’s concept of cultural hegemony is subsequently introduced as a complementary framework for analyzing the cultural dimension of power, while the theoretical differences between Foucault and Gramsci are maintained. The analysis suggests that power in contemporary societies cannot be understood solely through formal governmental decisions or direct coercion. It must also be examined through mechanisms of meaning production, knowledge validation, normalization, classification, and subject formation. Foucauldian analysis therefore provides a useful framework for examining the relationship between power, culture, media, knowledge, and identity, while Gramsci’s concept of hegemony adds the dimensions of consent and cultural and moral leadership.
