English
This paper examines the pivotal role of critical thinking in addressing climate change complexities and advancing sustainable development within vulnerable environmental systems. It highlights the efficacy of case studies as pedagogical tools to cultivate this cognitive capacity. Given the interdisciplinary and socio-scientific nature of climate issues, stakeholders must adeptly analyze empirical data, detect cognitive biases, and evaluate trade-offs across environmental, economic, and social domains. Through active learning and engagement with real-world scenarios, case studies foster independent, evidence-based decision-making. This approach is paramount where policy choices bypass rigorous scientific scrutiny, risking irreversible socio-economic repercussions. Exemplifying this, Sri Lanka’s abrupt transition to organic agriculture and the premature closure of the Indian Point nuclear plant in the United States demonstrate how ideologically driven policies, detached from scientific evidence, induce economic instability and disrupt livelihood security. The imperative for critical analysis is further amplified in highly climate-vulnerable, resource-constrained contexts like Afghanistan. Characterized by fragile ecosystems and severe livelihood dependence on natural resources, Afghanistan faces compounding crises—including prolonged droughts, water scarcity, soil erosion, and flash floods—which directly undermine economic stability and human development. This article argues that integrating localized case studies focused on Afghanistan’s empirical challenges (e.g., hydro-politics, reforestation, and climate adaptation) can significantly enhance the critical thinking skills of students, researchers, and policymakers. Ultimately, cultivating critical thinking through empirical case analysis constitutes a fundamental prerequisite for designing equitable, resilient, and sustainable climate policies in vulnerable nation.
