Media and the Problematic of Reimagining Thought: A Critical Rereading of the Confluences Between the Frankfurt School and Cultural Studies

This article aims to re-conceptualize the notion of the reproduction of thought in contemporary media by examining the theoretical linkage between the Frankfurt School’s critical theory and the Birmingham tradition of Cultural Studies. Drawing upon the concept of the culture industry developed by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, alongside Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model, the study argues that mainstream media function not merely as institutions reflecting reality but as active mechanisms of meaning production and ideological orientation of social consciousness. Methodologically, the research adopts an analytical–theoretical review and conceptual synthesis of existing scholarship within critical media theory. The findings indicate that contemporary media construct a “closed loop of consent” through the standardization of language, ideological framing of events, hierarchical valuation of human suffering, and the rationalization of violence. Within this process, audiences appear free while their interpretive horizons remain structured by pre-encoded frameworks of meaning. Consequently, thought is not generated as an autonomous intellectual practice but reproduced within a preconfigured communicative cycle. At the same time, integrating Frankfurt School theory with Cultural Studies demonstrates that media systems are not entirely closed structures, as negotiated and oppositional readings remain possible for audiences. However, such forms of resistance are largely contained within hegemonic boundaries. The study concludes that contemporary media should be understood not merely as instruments of information dissemination but as an industry of consciousness — a system that simultaneously produces meaning, regulates the horizon of thinking, and reproduces global  ideological order
