Abstract
This special issue of Nebras examines
the complex relationship among language, discourse, power, and society,
with particular attention to the mechanisms through which language and systems
of meaning shape perception, constitute social reality, institutionalize norms,
and either reproduce or challenge structures of domination. From this
perspective, discourse is understood not merely as a medium for the
transmission of meaning, but as a constitutive field in which power is
articulated and exercised, and within which the boundaries between truth and
falsehood, legitimacy and exclusion, possibility and impossibility are
discursively constructed. The special issue demonstrates that discourse
possesses a dual capacity. On the one hand, through the naturalization of
inequality, the marginalization of alternative voices, and the formation of
compliant subjectivities, it may contribute to the consolidation of hegemony
and domination. On the other hand, discourse can generate the conditions for
critical consciousness, social empowerment, dialogical engagement, and
resistance. Within this framework, contemporary Afghanistan is examined as a
concrete manifestation of the entanglement of physical and discursive power,
where control over language, education, meaning, and social presence becomes
intertwined with the restriction of participation and the exclusion of
particular groups from the public sphere. Drawing upon perspectives from social
philosophy, critical theory, philosophical anthropology, media studies, and
human rights, Nebras seeks to illuminate the often-hidden mechanisms
through which power operates within language and everyday life. In doing so, it
aims to contribute to the cultivation of social awareness, critical
self-consciousness, and a renewed reflection on relations of power. From
this standpoint, language is understood simultaneously as an instrument through
which domination may be reproduced and as a field of possibility for critique,
resistance, and the opening of new horizons of social transformation.
