Abstract

Raising the problem of the widespread misunderstanding of the concept of power within the Islamic political tradition -particularly the domain of Khorasan and the Islamic world -this article argues that the prevailing interpretation of the political thought of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Māwardī, a prominent fifth-century AH thinker, has been forged upon reductionist jurisprudential readings and the theory of taghallub (coercive dominance), thereby casting a veil over the more mature strata of his philosophy. The methodology of this research rests upon text-based analysis and conceptual reconstruction, examining his treatise Durar al-Sulūk fī Siyāsat al-Mulūk as a representative artifact of al-Māwardī’s late and empirical phase of thought. The findings of the article evince that, for al-Māwardī, power is conceived not as an instrument of sheer subjugation, but rather as a moral responsibility and an institutional mechanism for the generation of justice, sound oversight, truthful intelligence, beneficence, security, and trustworthiness—a conceptualization that resonates with contemporary theories of good governance and ethical leadership. The article concludes that a critical re-reading of al-Māwardī can furnish an indigenous and ethical foundation for critiquing contemporary authoritarianism and redefining the theory of power within the Islamic world, holding profound significance for nations such as Afghanistan that grapple with crises of legitimacy and efficacy.
