Abstract

Power has always been one of the fundamental concepts in the social sciences, political science, and communication studies. However, technological developments and transformations in communication systems have also altered the mechanisms, actors, and resources through which power is exercised. While classical conceptions primarily associated power with the state, political authority, and the ability to impose one’s will, the expansion of mass media, communication networks, digital platforms, big data, algorithms, and, more recently, artificial intelligence has given rise to new forms of power. This study aims to rethink the transformation of the concept of power in the fields of communication and media and to explain its transition from traditional political and media structures to networked, platform-based, and algorithmic structures. In terms of its purpose, the study is descriptive and employs a narrative review approach. The findings indicate that the transformation of power should not be understood merely as the replacement of one form of power by another; rather, new forms of power have been layered onto existing structures and operate in interaction with them. In the digital age, power has gradually shifted from the direct control of messages and ownership of media toward the control of communication infrastructures, data, and computational rules that shape the selection, ranking, distribution, and visibility of information. Accordingly, this article argues that understanding communication power in the digital age requires an integrated analytical framework that examines the relationships among political institutions, media, networks, platforms, data, algorithms, and intelligent systems.
