Abstract
This study critically interrogates the “tragedy of power in the post-truth condition”, re-examining the shifting nexus of power, truth, and ethics. By the tragedy of power, we designate the paradox wherein expanding technological, communicative, and regulatory capacities coincide with a crisis of meaning, the erosion of normative horizons, and the severing of knowledge from virtue. This transformation is examined within a historical order shaped by instrumental rationality. Employing critical discourse analysis and a genealogical framework, the study traces power’s shift from classical disciplinary formations to contemporary algorithmic control and overt populism. It analyzes how ethical autonomy is subordinated to profitability, efficiency, and calculability, while technologically mediated systems of dehumanization reshape human subjectivity and collective existence. Alongside functional nihilism, the inquiry addresses the radical politicization of truth—where truth is subsumed by discursive competition and politics becomes an arena of affective mobilization, polarization, and symbolic antagonism. Consequently, rational dialogue is marginalized, producing a structural closure that stifles emancipatory action. Finally, addressing identity-driven tensions in contemporary communicative environments, this study argues for an “existential turn.” It advocates for a transition from power grounded in domination and calculation toward a paradigm of virtue-oriented agency and “capability in relation to the Other,” safeguarding ethical and civilizational life in the twenty-first century through relationality, responsibility, and recognition.
